Planning for Your Child's Higher Education: A Cost-Based Approach

Preparing for your child's higher education doesn't start with the question "where should I invest?" It starts with a different one: "what will this actually cost?" Once the cost is clear, the other decisions become much easier. This is what a cost-based approach means.

Begin by adding up the full cost in today's terms: tuition, living expenses, books, travel and any entrance preparation. Then decide how many years away the admission is. Education costs can rise faster than general prices, so it helps to convert today's cost into a future cost. For example, purely for illustration and not as a forecast: if a course costs ₹20 lakh today and costs rise at a hypothetical 8% a year, the same course could cost roughly ₹32 lakh about six years from now.

Now work backwards. Once you know the amount needed and the years left, you can work out how much to set aside each month. Less time means a larger monthly amount, while starting early keeps each month's commitment lighter. A goal 15 years away and a goal 3 years away should not be invested in the same way.

The second part is matching risk to the time left. A long runway can usually take more market-linked exposure, while a date that is getting close calls for a gradual shift towards more stable options, so that a market fall just before admission does not derail the plan. SEBI has recently introduced a category called Life Cycle Funds, built around a target year, which reduce equity exposure automatically as that year approaches. They may not suit everyone, the same glide path applies to every investor, and returns are never assured.

Finally, review once a year. Check whether your cost estimate and your savings still line up, and keep this goal separate from your other goals and your emergency fund, so that it is not drawn on for something else. The figures here are illustrations only. Your actual costs, your child's age and your risk tolerance will shape the real picture.
